Pomeranians are a lively and spunky little breed. They love to play and can entertain you for hours. They originated out of the Prussian region of Pomerania. They were descendants from the ancient Spitz breed of the far north. Pomeranians were originally bought to Europe to herd sheep. Pomeranian’s ancestors could weigh up to 30 pounds. Around the late 1800’s, because of her love for the breed Queen Victoria established her own kennel. Shortly after, she began showing her own dogs, and was meant with a bit of success. Queen Victoria’s love for the breed helped them to become very popular in England. Because breeders knew that she liked small dogs they began breeding smaller standard to toy Pomeranians. Through time they have been bred down to their more common size of 4 to 5 pounds.
Pomeranians are the ultimate small, fluffy dog breed that’s on the market today. They are one of the few breeds that have abundant amount of hair (ruff) around the neck and chest area. With their wedge shaped head and erect ears they resemble a fox more than anything else. The majority of toy Pomeranian’s have bright, dark almond-shaped eyes and a nose that’s darker or the same color of their coat. Their bountiful double coat usually comes in a solid color; the most common are red, orange, white or cream. Their signature feature is their distinctive feathered tail. Their tail fans forward over the back. Toy Pomeranians are known as one of the more intelligent breeds. They are also very loyal to their owners. Between their intelligence and their loyalty they are eager to learn to please their owners. Therefore, you’ll find training a Pomeranian is easier than training other breeds. They are often found in circus performing tricks.
Pomeranians are very prissy dogs and good grooming is essential to their well being. This means that brushing your dog daily or twice a day is vital to their upkeep. Their coat rarely needs trimming and combing is basically a waste of time. You’ll find that if you don’t keep up with their grooming your dog will become very temperamental. They don’t like being a mess, nor do they like not looking pretty. They are a loving companion and will always be by your side. Toy Pomeranians are small enough to travel with you where ever you go. They love to be out and about town.
