When You Should Choose a Pomeranian Dog

I am sure that you have been out and seen those cute little tiny dogs that sort of resembled a lion. They are called Pomeranian dogs and they have a lot to them. Not just that cute little face under all that poofy hair.

Pomeranian dogs are very small, but very lively little dogs. Originally these dogs were quite large, but have been breed down into the toy breed you see today. One of the most popular owners of the Pomeranian was Queen Victoria way back in the 1800’s. She made the Pomeranian quite popular with England families.

The Pomeranian dogs are, as you know, one of the smallest in the AKC. The American Kennel Club introduced the Pomeranian in the year 1892! It is a very old AKC breed. According to the AKC, the breed, to show, must be between three and seven pounds and measuring between seven and twelve inches. If the dog is properly cared for it can live to be fifteen years old.

These Pomeranian dogs have that very fluffy look due to having a double thick coat. The outer coat is long and fluffy and the inner is short and woolly. They have dark little almond shaped eyes and a small wedge shaped face. The typical colors are usually solid and are orange, red, white, blue, brown, black, and cream. They can be a mix of the colored too, but to show them they must be a solid color.

Do not ever underestimate the Pomeranian. They are very vivacious and intelligent. They are easy to train and teach tricks to because they are eager to please their master. They are very loyal to their families which brings out a bad trait in them. The excessive barking! It is their way of showing others not to mess with “their” families. If you want to stop this they must be trained not to do so as puppies.

The Pomeranian, while very active, is good to be an indoor dog. Letting them outside makes them prone to getting that very thick fur messed up. They have to be brushed regularly just to avoid this as it is. You do not need the extra aggravation. Taking them for daily walks will give them a chance for fresh air. The eyes can goop up and need to be cleaned daily as well.

If you are looking for a small dog that will thrive in small places then this may be the dog for you. Be sure to train it not to bark. Especially if you live in an apartment and you have close neighbors. They are very loving and affectionate dogs.
